The high-pitched shrill of a dental drill invokes fear in most people but for some that same shrill can bring creativity and joy. They are know as dental drill artists. These artists use the same drills and little burs your local dentist use, but instead of drilling away cavities they drill away glass, metal, wood, antler, eggshells, and more to make images, designs, and lettering. Author Roger F. Wolford has gathered information from various sources, interviews, and used his own 20 years of experience to create a guide for the beginner with the desire to use the high-speed dental drill to create engravings and carving. He walks us through basic information of the dental drills and dental burs, air compressor selection, and image transfer methods. Roger gives examples of how the dental drills can be used to create art on eggshells, gourds, gunstocks, antler, bone, wine bottles, and more with instructions and full color photos. You also get the author’s reviews on 6 popular dental drill handpieces side by side. Roger tests them in his workshop and shares his results and ratings with you the readers. Plus he gives 4 entry-level step-by-step projects to get the new dental drill artist started making art.

great book
All the information is available on the web and youtube. basically it is not worth the money.
excellent book
very well written and easy to understand, comparisons of different carving hand-pieces and burs was really very good, his explanations of different uses of the dental hand-pieces and the different types of artwork you can accomplish with it was very enlightning. Roger kept his explanations simple and easy to understand; can't wait to see his next book, I'm sure it will also be very good
This was an excellent book….I was on the fence looking at a couple of engravers. The SCM and the Vortex f5. After seeing a real user review it I was sold. He picked the SCM as the number one top tool for many reasons. Power, Warranty, Durability, Noise and Customer service. This was quite contrary to what the Vortex site says about the SCM high speed engraving tools. He said the Vortex F5 is too new to know out about the durability and dependability. I did not want to take a chance. I have had my SCM for about a month and I can say it is truly amazing. I am no artist… I used the stenciling process to do this oak leaf wood engraving. SCM even included a professional full training DVD for free that covers the wood engraving. Great customer service…. Here is a photo of my engraving… The book helped me make a wise and informed decision on what the best tool was….Thanks
it was well written, and answered my questions about the differences between high speed systems. It also talked about places to get supplies and techniques. I have'nt done any high speed carving yet, and I have only had beginning level experience in Foredom/Dremmel tools
I really wanted this book to be great because it is one of its kind. I will review the chapters in bulk so others understand what is in this book.

Format The book is a light 80 pages of meaningful content. It has LARGE font. If the author used regular font you find in other books, it would have fit in 30-40 pages.

Handpiece reviews The author reviews 5 hand pieces. Each review is a page and a half long of large font, picture, and small review by the author that did not sway me one way or the other. Frankly speaking, less than any review you would find online.

Turbine 3-4 pages on air turbine, the one good point I found is the mention that you need a regulator and moisture control. The rest, can read in any post online.

Burs couple of good tips, for example make sure out get friction grip rates burs. Some are carbide, Damond, and stone burs. Come to think of it, I think I just covered the whole chapter.

Air compressor, Safety, and shop setup lumped them since they are all about 6 pages. Nothing here you did not know, or can find online about minimum compressor needed for carving

That literally made up half the book. If it was normal size font, it would have been 15-20 pages, good for an article in a mag or couple blog posts. The rest of the book are sample projects, nothing to write home about. I liked the egg carving one, but that was a quick "hmm interesting" moment.

Overall, I wish the author spent more time about carving, bits, and real meaty content. I loved the YouTube video by the author demonstrating the performance of the handpieces. This book did not contribute anything to that video and if anything, it was a let down by the author. I really wish second addition of other books for the author would have more meat to them.
