Who is Dr. Peter Flammonde? Or, perhaps more accurately, what is Dr. Peter Flammonde? Flammonde goes from near-total obscurity to one of the most recognizable faces on the planet in just the thirty minutes it takes him to disarm three Muslim terrorists with hostages and a “dirty” bomb in the heart of downtown Chicago.

The morning-long siege at the Mercantile Trust Company was carried live by nearly every channel in the world in anticipation of recording the worst terrorist disaster on US soil since 9/11/2001. Estimated to have been in the billions, the final audience watched incredulously as Flammonde calmly and with no authorization or support walked into the bank and disarmed the terrorists. His actions were broadcast live from the security cameras inside the bank and replayed over and over again in every country on earth.

From that moment on, the world and the media simply cannot get enough of the “hero” Flammonde; a very tall, good-looking man, highly educated and beloved by his students, with a modesty and reserve that underscores the remarkable feat he accomplished in the bank that day. Moreover, Flammonde possesses an aura of mystery that amplifies the thirst for knowledge about who he really is.

At first, the world embraces Peter Flammonde, including two remarkable women in the media – Clarissa McGhee and Judith Block – who fall in love with him while reporting on his activities. Flammonde appears to be the simple, authentic hero for whom the world longs at a time of media-created heroes with feet of clay. The public and the media see an inspiring college professor who brings a message of hope in his new book, a best seller because of his celebrity, about improving the human “soul” through practice, discipline and hard work.

Slowly, however, another Peter Flammonde emerges, this one much more threatening, with unusual mental abilities that include an ability to hear other people’s emotions, coupled with the remarkable power of a faith healer. Opinions about Flammonde polarize between those who claim that he is the Messiah promised in Revelations (a claim he rejects categorically) and those who believe that he is the Anti-Christ, returned to preside over the fall of mankind. Fundamentalist religious leaders who profit from the fear they create among parishioners promote the Anti-Christ depiction.

The conflict over categorizing Flammonde intensifies when Flammonde and his wealthy benefactor, Dr. Joshua Greenberg, publically oppose an effort by the powerful and conservative Christian Alliance to force the public schools to adopt teaching the Bible as part of their curriculum. Despite growing death threats against him from both Christian and Muslim extremists, Flammonde pursues his objective of mobilizing public opinion against those who would teach the Bible in the public schools – and in the process increasingly puts himself, his family and those he loves in danger.

That Man, Flammonde is the second in a series of four political novels by Gordon S. Black that take place in the United States during the first two decades of the 21st century, starting with the events of 9/11/2001. Black’s first novel, The Strange Patient in Room 119 (already published and available as a edition on ), relates the first half of the story of Richard Terhanian (later known as Warren Anderson), the “man who saw too much” of the massacres of Taliban prisoners by the Northern Alliance toward the end of 2001.

The entire series of novels, called The Democracy Saga, chronicles the corruption and erosion of democracy in the United States during the first two decades of the 21st Century. Black’s protagonists strive to root out the forces behind the electoral corruption and end the financial crisis which the country faces as a consequence of its badly broken democratic election process.

The author, Gordon S. Black, is a political scientist, by education, with a lifetime as a distinguished pollster/market analyst.

That Man Flammonde The Democracy Saga Book 2 eBook Gordon S Black Reviews

You will think that the book is too long (950p!). NOT AT ALL!!! It's a turn page and there is so many interesting facts in it that you can't wait to read the sequel. There is suspense, love, facts, philosophy. I have read all his books and for me, this is the best. Don't hesitate. Read it. You won't regret it.
That Man, Flammonde is one of the few novels in a decade that seems to capture both the mood of the time and the reader's imagination. This was the first novel I read by Gordon Black and found it to be such a wonderful read that I have since gone on to read several others books by the author (equally as readable and enjoyable I might add). This book, That Man, Flammonde clearly leaves room for a sequel and I am anxiously awaiting Gordon's next in what I hope will be a series (though few works that cross the timeliness and readabilty barrier so perfectly lend themselves to a series - I'll count myself lucky when the second comes out). Put simply - A MUST READ for older teens and up - one of the most thought provoking fictional works in some time and bordering on historical fiction gievn how well the US landscape has been captured. As an aside, I'd also note that Gordon seems to have captured the eReader format perfectly as none of the formatting errors found in many new books are present (quite a feat for a sevety year-old "digital immigrant" according to his bio).
I was pleasantly surprised by the refreshing writing style and entertaining story told by Gordon S. Black in "That Man, Flammonde." Overall, I really enjoyed reading this novel - I was hooked after the second chapter which sets the tone of the story.

One of the author's strengths is creating realistic characters who come to life and act in a believable manner. I especially liked his portrayal of the protagonist Peter Flammonde and his interactions with other characters in the story. Peter quickly evolves into a living, breathing man with a heavy weight on his shoulders as events transpire which change his life forever. Writing a character who grows and changes throughout a story is a challenging task for any author and Dr. Black does it well.

The variety of story elements really drew me in and made this book hard to put down. The twists and turns in the plot helped reel me in. The inclusion of so many historically timely events and themes make this a compelling and enjoyable read. In my opinion, I think "That Man, Flammonde" is very well written and on par with books I've ready by Tom Clancy.

For that reason, I'll definitely buy the sequel when it's published. Give this book a try and you won't be disappointed!
