The story may have oudated details but it also has fabulously vivid characters and uncharacteristically (for the times) strong women. The story was rewritten by Collins from the text of a previous, and unsuccessful, play. It has everything. Great I was stressed wondering how it would end!
This was a real page turner. Characters are perfectly defined and beliveable. Willie Collins spins an excellent tale that grasps the imagination and holds you there through the entire reading. No scheming through quickly. This book deserves your full attention. Sit back and enjoy the escape to another time and place.
... loads of fun just the same. Not a whodunit, really; you can readily deduce the criminal's identity and the tale quickly confirms what you have determined. But the villain's attempts to avoid detection and stave off disaster are engaging.
I think this would make a really good costume drama of a film.
I have recently become an ardent Willkie Collins' fan, beginning with the reading of The Woman in White and The Moonstone, then moving on to No Name and Armadale. All were well worth reading and this novel meets the same high standard. I will definitely read more of his writing - perhaps all of it!
This is an excellent mystery - truly as good as any modern novel I've read (and I've read a lot of them). Collins is a real genius in the genre of mysteries. Enjoy! I certainly did.
Wilkie Collins writes very well, and that always underpins his stories, and assures a pleasurable read--one rarely found in contemporary mysteries, poorly penned--even when the story itself requires the reader to suspend disbelief. There is always a turn too many. But Collins's books are page turners, and entertaining bedtime reading. Jezebel's Daughter is not his best, but it also merits more than three stars for its genre, therefore four.
I didnt care for this classic. The characters are shown ridiculously naive and never see any red flags. They never object or stand their ground. This in necessary so that one “evil” character can control and fool them all. One of my least favorite plots.
I have not read other titles by Collins. I will try one of the better know classics by him.
